Cub Scout Pack 805 exhibits teamwork at Pinewood Derby

It’s a Cub Scout tradition that goes back many years and is something the dens of Windham’s Cub Scout Pack 805 look forward to every year. On Saturday, Jan. 28 at Windham Middle School, assisted by Boy Scout Troop 805, there were cheers and celebration as the Pinewood Derby gave scouts a chance to see how their cars stacked up against other scouts from within the pack.

There were 42 racers and each scout got to race their car four times. The top five and overall best in show moved on to the district race in April.

What begins as a block of wood with two axles and four wheels can end up having any shape and design that a scout can come up with; and there were a variety of very cool and very fast cars that competed in this race.

“The scouts really root each other on,” said Cub Scout Pack 805 Cubmaster and Webelos Den Leader Casey Melanson. “Even if they don’t win their heat, they’re still rooting for each other. The day went really well; the boys were very excited. There was a lot of enthusiasm and we set some records with some speeds.”

Pinewood Derby participants construct and paint the tiny cars from fabricated blocks of pine and then attach them to small plastic wheels and flexible metal axles. The cars are placed on a wooden track and entered in races powered by inertia and gravity.

Racing in the Pinewood Derby is a fundamental part of scouting and a tradition whereby each Cub Scout is given a block of pine and they must meet some general guidelines about weight, height, and length. They then spend the next few weeks designing, carving, and painting all while using artistic expression and developing a basic understanding of physics.

Participants also work with their parents in planning, cutting, sanding, and painting the cars.

Winners from these Windham races advance to the District Pinewood Derby races featuring participants who won community races in their packs last month.

Results of the 2023 Pinewood Derby at Windham Middle School are as follows:

Fifth place, second-grader Drew Foxe, Wolf

Fourth place, kindergartner Isaac Littlefield, Lion

Third place, first-grader Kye Fowler, Tiger

Second place, first-grader Owen Conroy, Tiger

First place, third-grader Jackson Bennett, Bear – who set a record of 191.60 miles per hour.

Bennett said he and his dad built the car. His design for it was to make it a little round at the edge so it could go the fastest down the track; they also put the weight in the back.

He said he thought he did his best and when asked why he simply held up his first-place trophy. He said that he definitely had fun at the event.

According to Melanson, the biggest lesson of the Pinewood Derby is teamwork. The scouts and their parents build their cars, they work with other scouts and when it comes to racing everyone cheers everyone on.

The Cub Scout motto of “do your best” is highly embodied during the annual Pinewood Derby. The Cub Scouts build the best cars they can and use their creativity to turn a simple block of wood into something spectacular. It shows both good spirit and is a good learning experience, Melanson said.

Gay’s car was shaped like a pirate ship, complete with removable mast. His dad helped him, but he stained it.

“I feel very happy for all the people, even if they didn’t win awards; I feel like everyone did their best,” said Gay.

He is so excited to compete in the district championship and is happy he got ‘best in show.’

All money raised during the Pinewood Derby will go toward the Spring Fling in May.

The top five fastest racers and the ‘best in show’ winner will compete at the district race in April at Camp Hinds in Raymond hosted by Cub Scout Pack 805. <

The Windham Veterans Center buzzed with excitement the morning of Saturday April 17. The Pinewood Derby track was set up, and many eager Cub Scouts from Troop 805 and their families anxiously waited for the races to begin, with some putting the finishing touches on their cars.

The Pinewood Derby cars start out as just a block of wood and, in the end, can look like just about anything, as long as they stay within the guidelines for competing in the race. These Cub Scouts picked their own individual designs and painted their cars.

Scouts fashioned the tiny cars from blocks of pine and then attached plastic wheels and metal axles in an exercise designed to foster teamwork, ingenuity and sportsmanship. During the derby, the cars were placed on a wooden track and entered in races powered by inertia and gravity.

Win or lose, the scouts can take pride in having done their best and through the competition, they learn craft skills, the rules of fair play, and good sportsmanship, things they will remember for life.

A lot of hard work had gone into preparing for the races, but now, the time had come to see how these cars would perform against the other local Cub Scout dens.

“It builds a sense of accomplishment because they build their cars, they work on them with their parents; it gives them something to show for something that they worked hard on,” said Casey Melanson, den leader for Wolves and Tigers.

The Pinewood Derby teaches scouts valuable lessons, Melanson said, and the Cub Scout motto of ‘do your best’ is evident in the Pinewood Derby because regardless of what place the scouts come in, they can take pride in what they’ve built.

Fifth grader Matthew Melanson, who came in second place overall, said it took a few weeks to get his car how he wanted it. He said he liked that he won second place, it was fun competing in the race and he had a good time.

Along with the top five winners, the troop handed out three ‘best in show’ awards, for the best designed cars.

“Oh, it was awesome!” said second grader Ayden Swartzengruber, who designed a shark racer that won him third in best in show. He said it was fun to compete in the race. It took two and a half days to make his car that had a big fin and shark teeth.

The five fastest racers usually advance to the district race against all the top five winners in the Casco Bay area. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, that district race is not happening this year.

In addition to the Cub Scout races, there was also a sibling race at the event where brothers and sisters raced against each other, without the scouts participating. First grader Clara Davis came in first in that race.

The Windham Den Leaders and Committee Members who helped put on this year's Pinewood Derby were Casey Melanson, Shane Spencer, Sarah DiDonato, Ben Beckwith, Tim Melanson, Carrie Rickett, and Amy Jorgensen. The Webelos den prepared the food for the event. 

Money raised at the 2021 Pinewood Derby will go toward the Windham Cub Scouts Annual Spring Fling event next month. <

 

Fast cars and great fun at the annual Pinewood Derby

Cub Scout Pack 805 held its annual Pinewood Derby, where Scouts from first grade to fifth grade race cars made from a block of wood. Each car has to weigh five ounces, have plastic wheels and fit within certain parameters.

The cars are only limited in design by the imagination of the boy creating it. This year there were many Star Wars themed cars, a hot dog, a police car, thin cars and even a football field. The speeds are clocked by computer, eliminating human confusion.

This year’s winners were first place Alexander Momot, second place Joseph Lopes, third place Calvin Bartz, fourth place Wyatt Richards and fifth place Jacob Spencer.

 

Trophies were also given to best in show for each age group (called a den) and one over all winner.
